At Young Epilepsy, we are proud to be at the heart of one of the world’s leading paediatric epilepsy research programmes. Our 2025 Research & Impact Report highlights a year of exceptional progress, innovation and collaboration – all focused on improving the lives of children and young people with epilepsy.
Between July 2024 and June 2025, our partnership delivered 48 active research projects, launched 6 new studies, and completed 5 major projects, demonstrating our growing impact in childhood epilepsy research.
World‑Class Research with Real‑World Impact
Our work spans the full epilepsy journey – from early diagnosis to treatment, education and long‑term support.
Key achievements include:
- 96 peer‑reviewed research papers and 26 expert reviews published in just one year
- 5 publications ranked in the top 5% worldwide for research impact
- Research addressing all ages, from newborns to young adults
- Studies covering genomics, imaging, surgery, mental health, education and family life.
Breakthrough projects include:
- Rapid genome sequencing, delivering diagnoses in a median of 21 days for babies with severe epilepsy
- AI‑powered MRI tools to detect hard‑to‑find brain abnormalities
- Ground‑breaking work in gene therapy, digital brain modelling, and precision epilepsy surgery.
Focused on Early Diagnosis and Better Outcomes
Early intervention is central to everything we do. In 2024/25:
- 31% of projects focused on improving diagnosis and treatment
- 26% addressed the medical causes of epilepsy
- 26% explored how epilepsy affects development and behaviour.
This focus helps reduce the long diagnostic journey faced by many families and opens the door to more personalised treatments.
Putting Children, Young People and Families First
Young Epilepsy leads the way in Patient and Public Involvement (PPI), ensuring research reflects real lived experience.
Our growing networks include:
- 217 members in the E‑CURe parent and carer research network
- 200+ young people aged 13–25 in our Youth Voice Network
Families directly shape research into mental health support, education, digital tools and transition to adult services.
Looking Ahead: Creating a Future Where Every Child Can Thrive
Our research programme continues to grow, with:
- Nearly 100 researchers and clinicians collaborating worldwide
- A strong pipeline of future leaders, including 35 PhD students
- Increasing focus on education, wellbeing and family support.
